CONSERVATION OF MARINE MAMMALS, BIRDS AND THEIR HABITATS POIS.02.04.00-00-0021 / 16

The project aims to protect marine mammals (seals and porpoises) and coastal bird broods (Ringed plover, Little tern, Sandwich tern, Common tern and Oystercatcher) against anthropogenic factors, minimizing the interaction between mammals and sea birds and fisheries (particularly important for the critically endangered population of the porpoise in the Baltic Sea), collecting scientific data on marine mammals, monitoring species, their habitats and existing threats as well as monitoring migration routes of seals. The Blue Patrol activities is being continued. 200 volunteers are protecting marine habitats and animals.

Populations of breeding bird species on the sea beaches have been disappearing over the last 20-30 years and only active conservation can stop this process. Polish beaches are also increasingly visited by seals and the anthropopressure on these species should be prevented. That’s why there are planned educational activities in the project, for example disseminating instructions on how to behave when you see a sea mammal to local communities and tourists, organizing meetings with main stakeholders involved in the protection of marine ecosystems and economic activities on the sea.
